Scams – be wary of the call / email claiming to be from the ATO

Scams – be wary of the call / email claiming to be from the ATO
The Australian Taxation Office over the last few years have advised of various scams that are communicated via SMS, phone and email and recently there has been a spike in the fraudulent activity. Both the ATO website and www.scamwatch.gov.au list the various scams being run, and we have summarised some of that information in an article we have prepared for our clients. The article covers the tips on how to avoid becoming a victim, how to recognise a scam and what to do if you become a victim of a tax related scam. You need to be careful every day, scams include a simple SMS to a level of sophistication including links to cleverly designed website pages that look official at a glance but which are not the official ATO website.  The real ATO website has copies of various screen shots of  some of the SMS and dodgy websites if you want to see it for yourself. Please don't hesitate to contact us at Marsden Stantons if you have any concerns. Click here to enjoy the read.
